Thinking about improving your garden centre? Ask these questions first

‘One of the biggest mistakes I see is people starting with the structure rather than the objective. The best projects begin by understanding what you’re trying to achieve, not by choosing a canopy.’

Steve Toone, Managing Director, Fordingbridge

Every garden centre is different.

Some owners are looking to create more covered retail space. Others want to extend their café, protect seasonal displays, improve customer flow or simply make better use of an underused area of their site.

Whatever the ambition, the same principle applies. Before we start talking about canopies, we always ask a series of questions that help shape the project. More often than not, the answers influence the final design far more than the structure itself.

  1. What are you trying to achieve?

This is always the first question.

Are you looking to increase retail space? Create more covers for café customers? Protect valuable stock from the weather? Improve the customer journey? Or encourage visitors to spend longer in certain areas of your garden centre?

Understanding the objective helps ensure the investment delivers real commercial value, rather than simply creating another covered space.

  1. How do your customers use the space today?

Watching how customers naturally move around a garden centre often reveals opportunities that aren’t immediately obvious.

Where do people gather? Which routes are busiest? Which areas are overlooked because they’re exposed to the weather?

Sometimes the best location for a canopy isn’t where it was originally planned.

  1. Will the new space still work in five years’ time?

Garden centres continually evolve.

Retail trends change, seasonal displays move, cafés grow and customer expectations develop. The best outdoor spaces are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing them to adapt as your business changes.

It’s worth thinking about tomorrow’s requirements as well as today’s.

  1. How will it fit with the rest of the centre?

The best canopy is often the one customers hardly notice.

Not because it isn’t impressive, but because it looks like it has always belonged there.

At Haskins Garden Centre, West End, the horseshoe canopy was carefully designed to complement the existing buildings and create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor retail spaces. Good design should enhance what’s already there rather than compete with it.

  1. Have you thought beyond the structure?

A successful outdoor space is about much more than steel and roofing.

Lighting, drainage, planting, signage, power supplies and customer flow all contribute to creating an environment that people enjoy spending time in.

Looking at the whole picture from the outset almost always produces a better result.

  1. Are you involving the right people early enough?

One of the biggest advantages of involving an experienced partner early is that potential challenges can be identified before they become costly problems.

Planning considerations, underground services, installation programmes and integration with existing buildings are all much easier to manage when they’re discussed from the beginning rather than halfway through a project.

That’s why many of our most successful projects begin with a conversation long before drawings are produced.

Every project starts with a chat

No two garden centres are the same, which is why no two projects should ever follow exactly the same route.

Taking the time to ask the right questions at the beginning helps ensure every investment delivers long-term value, enhances the customer experience and supports the way your business operates.

Coming to Glee? Let’s talk

If you’re thinking about improving your garden centre, whether it’s extending your café, creating additional retail space or making better use of your outdoor areas, we’d love to welcome you to our stand at Glee. We’ll be at stands 17F30, 17F33.

Come and have a coffee with the team, bring along your plans or a few photos of your site, and let’s talk through your ideas. You’ll also be able to see one of our canopies being assembled during the exhibition, giving you a real feel for the quality, craftsmanship and possibilities available.

Whether your project is next year or five years away, we’d be delighted to help you start the conversation.

If you’re not able to attend Glee this year, you can still get in touch with us for a quote or a free site visit and consultation.
