‘One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that no two garden centres are ever the same. Every project brings its own opportunities and challenges and finding the right solution is rarely just about the canopy. It’s about understanding how the space works, how the centre operates and what the client is trying to achieve.’
Steve Toone Managing Director, Fordingbridge
No two garden centres are ever the same
Whether it’s a national chain, or a small independent garden centre, every site has its own layout, trading patterns, customer flow and operational pressures. That means no two canopy projects are ever identical either. While the finished structure may look effortless, getting there often requires careful planning, creative thinking and years of experience.
At Fordingbridge, we’ve spent decades working alongside some of the UK’s leading garden centres, delivering canopies, walkways and entrance-ways that fit seamlessly into busy retail environments. It’s not simply about designing and installing a canopy – it’s about understanding how to make the project work around the day-to-day operation of a thriving business.
Working around a live retail environment
Unlike many construction projects, garden centres don’t stop trading while work takes place.
Customers still need to browse, cafés remain open and deliveries continue throughout the day. One of the biggest challenges is carefully planning every stage of the installation to minimise disruption.
That often means phased programmes, close co-ordination with centre management and flexible working practices that allow the centre to continue operating safely and efficiently throughout the build.
At Tates Garden Centre, Mayberry, for example, we carefully planned the extension of the existing canopy, allowing the centre to continue trading while creating additional covered retail space with minimal disruption to customers and staff.
Every site presents something different
Every project presents its own unique challenges. Some involve integrating a new canopy with an existing building, while others require us to replace an ageing structure without disrupting the day-to-day operation of a busy garden centre.
At Haskins Garden Centre, West End, for example, the project wasn’t a new addition, but the replacement of an existing canopy. Working within a tight site, we carefully removed the original structure before designing a new canopy that utilised the existing foundations. At the same time, it was essential to keep the outdoor retail space accessible, allowing the centre to continue trading while the work was carried out. Good design should enhance what’s already there rather than compete with it.
Other projects present very different challenges, from working around existing drainage and underground services to maintaining vehicle access and safe pedestrian routes throughout the build. Sometimes the biggest challenge is simply unlocking the potential of an awkward or underused space and transforming it into an attractive retail area that generates additional revenue.
Every site is different, and that’s exactly why no two solutions should ever be the same.
Experience makes all the difference
The earlier we’re involved in a project, the more value we can add.
Our team works closely with clients from the earliest discussions, identifying potential issues before they become expensive problems. Whether it’s planning considerations, ground conditions, integrating with existing structures or co-ordinating installation around busy trading periods, our experience allows us to anticipate challenges rather than simply react to them.
It’s an approach that gives our clients confidence throughout the project.
More than installing a canopy
A successful project isn’t judged solely by the day it’s completed.
It’s about creating an outdoor space that works for years to come – one that complements the existing environment, improves the customer experience and supports the commercial objectives of the business.
That’s why every project begins with understanding the garden centre itself. Only then can we recommend the right solution.
Coming to Glee in September? Let’s talk
If you’re considering improvements to your garden centre, whether it’s a new canopy, extending an existing structure or making better use of your outdoor space, we’d love to welcome you to our stand at Glee. We’ll be at stands 17F30, 17F33.
Come and have a coffee with the team, bring along your plans or a few photos of your site, and let’s talk through the opportunities and any challenges you’re facing. We’ll also be assembling one of our canopies for the exhibition, giving you the chance to see the quality of our design, materials and craftsmanship up close.
Every garden centre is different, and that’s exactly why every conversation starts with understanding your site, your customers and your ambitions. We look forward to seeing you at Glee.
If you’re not able to attend Glee this year, you can still get in touch with us for a quote or a free site visit and consultation.
