Shine bright: Harness sunlight for environmental gains

As we mark the longest day of the year (21st June) it might not feel as if we’ve had much of a summer to celebrate so far, but in the UK, we get more sunlight than you might believe. In fact, statistics show that on average, we get five ‘sun hours’ each day between April and September, which is plenty to generate clean, green solar power.

In fact, solar panels don’t even need direct sunlight to generate electricity. If it’s light enough to see, it’s light enough to generate a small amount of power.

Today, solar can already produce as much as 30% of UK electricity at different points in the year and even four years ago, in 2020, before the solar panel revolution properly took hold, solar provided more than 4% of the UK’s total supply.

The gains you can make by joining the solar revolution

If you’re looking to make your business more sustainable, installing solar panels on a new roof or solar canopy is a great way to do this in a simple way.

We took the plunge at our Head Office last year and have never looked back. Today, the 164 solar panels on our office and factory roofs produce more on average a third (32%) of our electricity – plenty to charge the EV charging points in our car park and provide surplus to help power the manufacture of customers’ projects at our onsite factory.

We’ve become real converts as it’s so easy to see the gains. That’s why, this year, we’ve launched our very own solar canopy range So, if you’re looking to cover an outdoor dining, social, gathering, or retail space on your site over the coming months, you can now make it so much more than just a weather protected area.

With the incorporation of solar panels, you can significantly cut your on-site running costs, while sending out a powerful message about your sustainability commitment and credentials. It’s the ultimate win-win!

An easy win

And the great news is that even relatively small structures can support solar panels. The image on this blog shows our recent installation of a solar canopy to provide all weather protection over e-charging facilities at an office complex – two green wins in one!
