How a playground canopy can create the ultimate space

Our top tips to use a playground canopy and make your space fun, engaging and inclusive

1. Firstly – think purpose. Obviously, the ultimate purpose of any playground will be play, but are you wanting your space to just promote play or are you wanting it to be an interactive learning space too? Or you might want a space that helps children connect with nature, or that promotes physical exercise. Having a clearly defined vision for your space is key to achieving a successful outcome.
2. Think inclusive. It’s important to ensure that as many children as possible can enjoy your new space. Talk with experts or families of children with disabilities and SEND so that you can factor in wider needs. Ramps, surfacing, textures, and signage can all have an impact on how easily children with disabilities and SEND can navigate and enjoy the space.
3. Make safety a priority. In the UK all playgrounds must comply with the EN1176 Safety Standard. Consult with experts to ensure your playground canopy design is free from potential hazards including sharp edges, unprotected drops or toxic materials.
4. Factor in the British weather! The British weather will throw all kinds at your play space. Consider canopy protection so that children can get the most out of your investment in all seasons. It’s also worth incorporating strategically placed bins – including recycling bins – in your design to encourage children to look after their new area and the environment.
7. Consider colour: Do you want your playground to blend into your environment or reflect your brand colours? Is it a natural looking haven you’re after? Or do you want to reflect the fun that will happen in the space with vibrant colours that pop against their surroundings? 8.
