Yesterday was Outdoor Classroom Day for schools across England, Scotland, and Wales. It has been fantastic to see that even with the downpours brought in by the recent storms, teachers were still finding ways to encourage students to learn outdoors. The one thing, however, we did notice is that many students were using coats and tarps as shelter from the rain; running around with wet school shoes, and wrapped up in raincoats.
Here at Fordingbridge we offer an array of design solutions that can weather protect and encourage the continuation of outdoor learning, without resulting in soggy uniforms and muddy boots – leaving the students dry and comfortable as they return to the classrooms for next lessons.
Creating a protected outdoor classroom and bringing learning outside encourages exercise and better mindfulness for students. We witnessed many schools taking part through outdoor yoga, building ‘campfires’ from natural materials, and even learning about flooding and erosion through experiments and hands-on tasks.
