Sky high hideouts: Designing the ultimate helicopter bunker

Life at Fordingbridge is never dull and we’re never quite sure what our next brief is going to be…but we always rise to the challenge!

So, when a world-famous name came to us wanting a bunker for his helicopter to keep it well-protected in all weathers and prevent him from ‘parking’ it on the front lawn, we were happy to oblige.

From our first site visit to the beautifully positioned house – in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – it was clear to us that the bunker needed to fit seamlessly into its stunning rural environment.

We decided to design the helicopter bunker so it was incorporated into an existing hill. An adapted steel taper trellis design created beautiful, curved canopy protection mirroring the lines of the hill in perfect synch.

This bespoke structure was covered with concrete plank walls and fully wrapped in EPDM to ensure total weather proofing, while solid oak panelled doors with a steel trim gave the elegant bunker a striking, contemporary feel.

The 12m x 15m structure was covered with a wild meadow living roof cutaway into the hillside to enable the building to blend seamlessly into its stunning surroundings and provide a natural habitat for the wildlife that thrives in the area.

Thanks to the success of this project, we have already been commissioned to design several more helicopter bunkers.
