Perrywood invests £8.5m and chooses Fordingbridge canopies

In today’s garden retail world, the most successful sites aren’t just focused on horticulture – they’re creating experiences. But as garden centre giant Perrywood knows it’s vital that plants remain the star attraction in any transformation…

When Perrywood recently embarked on a bold £8.5m redevelopment of its Sudbury Garden Centre in Suffolk, its ambition was to create a destination that offered a premium retail, leisure and horticultural experience. And we’re delighted that this ambitious ask led them directly to our expert garden team!

Gold standard plant display – a focal point of Perrywood’s upgrade

As part of the multi-million site upgrade at their Sudbury site, Fordingbridge designed and installed two vast barrel-vaulted taper trellis canopies for Perrywood, with each spanning an impressive 60m x 12m. Crucially these vast all-weather canopies have been carefully designed as revenue driving structures, engineered around three key commercial principles:

  • Showcase and protect Perrywood’s extensive plant ranges
  • Enhance customer’s browsing experience to encourage dwell time
  • Remove weather as a barrier to spend

The canopies use our unique Opal 60 roof sheeting to flood the area with natural daylight while shielding both customers and vulnerable stock from harmful UV. The result? A bright, uplifting browsing environment even on the dullest days.

Climate-smart and future proof

To ensure truly year-round trading, the new Fordingbridge designed plant display canopies incorporate several standout features:

  • Automated frost curtains protect stock at the touch of a button, saving vital revenue
  • Weather-reactive vents open and close automatically to maintain an optimal browsing and display environment
  • Integrated rainwater harvesting enables plant stock to be irrigated regularly and sustainably, helping to reduce operational costs

Commercial impact already taking shape

By transforming what was once a seasonal area into a climate-resilient, revenue driving anchor, Perrywood expects plant sales to flourish and contribute to its ambition of seeing overall sales rise from £4.5m currently to £6m by 2026.
