The brief

Having created an improved entrance for Whipsnade Zoo in 2015, the team came to us again wanting to create a new visitor centre that would not only enhance the experience of their millions of visitors, but that would also set new sustainability standards for the UK’s attraction sector.

The response

With sustainability our guiding design principle, we packed the new centre with forward thinking sustainability features, within our triple span canopy:

  • A glulaminated timber frame constructed entirely from sustainably sourced FSC accredited grade GL24 Norwegian Spruce, helped the centre nestle perfectly into its natural surroundings.
  • High-performance aluminium glazing with integrated doors and opening windows, bathed the expansive new area in natural light, helping connect visitors with the parkland beyond and conserving energy use by reducing the need for artificial light.
  • Our signature curved roofing, constructed using highly insulated composite panels, ensured air tightness, contributing to the building’s enviable energy rating.
  • Three dedicated air source heat pumps were incorporated into the design to work in conjunction with the building’s underfloor heating system, creating a low cost, low energy heating solution.
  • High level opening windows allow the internal temperature of the building to be moderated through passive ventilation, minimising the need for cooling strategies in the busy summer months.

The wow

Packed with carefully thought through sustainability features, the building has gained an A rating for energy efficiency. It has also become a hub for the zoo’s own recycling projects including turning used plastic drinks bottles into benches that are strategically positioned around the park. The triple span canopy has also virtually doubled the main building space, providing the zoo with exciting new retail opportunities to boost its vital conservation funds and work.

“Whether it’s finding a gift for a loved one or just enjoying a delicious coffee before the drive home, I think the stunning new visitor centre will bookend a day at the zoo in a lovely way and make the experience absolutely first rate.”
Owen Craft, General Manager, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo
