The brief

Thanks to a combination of Sports Premium funding and dedicated fundraising efforts by pupils, parents and staff St Stephen’s CP School had been able to transform a disused area of their school grounds to create a new MUGA canopy suitable for play, sports activities and inter-school competitions.

But they knew it could be even more useful if it was a fully weatherproof MUGA canopy, which is where we came in…

The response

We designed a large 20m x 37m steel structure to create a fully weatherproof MUGA canopy to cover the entire area.

With weatherproofing the number one goal, we used galvanized steel for the structure – ideal for protecting against corrosion in coastal environments – and our exclusive Opal 60 fabric to cover the barrel-vaulted roof.

This unique fabric is 100% waterproof and allows up to 60% daylight to penetrate compared to other roofing fabrics that typically allow less than 30% daylight penetration, enabling us to create fully waterproof canopies that also flood an area with natural light.

The wow

At the same time as our exclusive Opal 60 fabric allows significant daylight penetration into the MUGA, it also protects players from harmful UV rays, meaning schools can confidently allow sports and competitions to be played in areas covered by the fabric, throughout the summer months.
