Timber canopied bike shelter provides attractive all-weather protection on campus

As part of a push to encourage sustainable living practices, the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) came to us wanting to create a substantial bike shelter for their students to use to encourage environmentally friendly bike commutes to lectures.

The university was keen that the bike shelter should be able to house a substantial number of bikes and be as enclosed as possible to provide all-weather protection. It was also important to the university that the shelter should be attractive enough to enhance its surroundings.

The wow

Working closely with the university’s estates and project management teams we designed a simple, elegant bike shelter with exposed structural timbers that sat beautifully in the spaces surrounding it. A distinctive curved roof design softened the look of the structure, while allowing ample bike storage space inside.

Polycarbonate walls at the front of the bike shelter and a roof covered in our unique Opal 60 roofing fabric ensures the structure is flooded with light whilst also being weather-proof. Timber cladding on the rear and ends of the bike shelter help to give the structure a soft, natural look that also reinforces the shelter’s sustainability message.

Importantly, our Opal 60 roofing allows 60% daylight to penetrate while shielding areas from harmful UV rays – important for protecting the bikes stored beneath.
