Pre-design shelter gives popular primary a cost-effective extension

Primary schools are under constant pressure for additional learning space, with large class sizes and practical activities demanding more space than is available in the average classroom.

Several years ago, St David’s C of E Primary School came to us with this exact challenge, which we solved with a simple cantilever canopy that provided shade off several classrooms, enabling pupils to enjoy learning outside in all weathers.

The new outside area proved so popular that when the school came to do groundworks in the courtyard area it covered, it decided to upsize and upgrade this valuable additional all-weather space.

The wow

The solution? An attractive barrel-vaulted, timber frame canopy from our pre-designed range of canopy structures.

Measuring 22m long x 5.5m wide, the new canopy fully covers the courtyard space and runs the length of several classrooms. With double the amount of sheltered space the old cantilever canopy delivered, the school now has a space that can house outdoor reading, crafting, science and group learning sessions, four seasons a year.

The flexible multi-use space will also prove invaluable as an additional all-weather area for school events such as summer fairs and school open days.

The timber frame of the canopy complements the trees that back onto the courtyard giving the space an attractive natural look. And the Opal 60 roofing that covers the structure allows daylight to flood the area below while screening out harmful UV rays – a huge win in a primary setting.
