Solar canopy provides dual bonus of parking shelter and renewable energy for busy business park

Watchmoor Business Park came to us with a clear brief. They wanted to provide quality facilities for the businesses on their site and wanted those facilities to be as sustainable as possible.

Following one of our complimentary site visits – designed to help businesses maximise the potential of their sites – our inhouse design team devised a plan that ticked multiple boxes for Watchmoor.

A 31m x 6m cantilever car canopy was created to provide shelter for up to 12 parking bays, including two more generous bays for disabled parking.

To fulfill Watchmoor’s sustainable vision several of the bays provide electric charging points for staff cars, while the insulated Kingspan panels making up the cantilever canopy are topped with solar panels. This win-win design means that as cars are charged up with clean, renewable energy beneath, the canopy sheltering them is also generating additional renewable energy for businesses on the site.

Crucially, the new car canopy frame is made in galvanised steel for durability. This ensures that it will stand for decades to come – no matter how much it’s put through its paces by the British weather – vital when longevity is a must in any sustainable design.
