Cantilever canopy brings cool, calm shade to a much-loved outdoor space for SEND pupils 

For Scott Wilkie Primary School in Custom House, Newham outdoor learning isn’t an add-on – it’s an essential part of the school day and the school’s dedicated outdoor play and learning area for SEND pupils is much-loved, offering space to explore, create and recharge in the fresh air.

But there was one challenge holding the space back. While open and welcoming, it offered little protection from the elements limiting how often it could be used. The school’s brief to us was simple. To create generous shade and shelter, without cluttering the space or introducing obstacles for pupils to navigate.

The wow

Our solution was a carefully considered bespoke cantilever canopy that delivers maximum benefit with minimal visual and physical impact.

Working regularly with specialist SEND schools and teams, we understand how important clarity, openness and ease of movement are. The canopy’s sleek structural frame is positioned flush against the perimeter fencing, keeping the space open and free from obstructions. An elegant arched silhouette and generous height gives the structure a light, unobtrusive feel, allowing the natural features of the area to remain centre stage.

Measuring 6.5m x 4.5m, the canopy now shelters a significant portion of the outdoor space, enabling everything from messy play and crafts to outdoor lessons and quiet time to happen whatever the weather.

The structure is roofed with our Opal 60 system, which screens out harmful UV rays while still allowing plenty of natural daylight through. This means pupils can enjoy outdoor play and learning during warmer months, without the constant need for sunscreen breaks.

This is now the fourth canopy project we have completed for the school and with its blue polyester powder coated finish, this ties in with the other canopies for a smart, cohesive feel across the site. Backed by our sector leading 25-year guarantee, the canopy is built to stand the test of time.
