The team at The John Roan School selected a 7m x 6m timber-framed shelter to create a new all-weather outdoor seating and social area where students could relax, recharge and connect during breaks.

The finished structure proves that off-the-shelf doesn’t have to mean ordinary. Crafted from high-quality, sustainably sourced timber, the curved canopy creates a light, open environment that feels welcoming and seamlessly connected to the attractive surrounding outdoor space.

The curves of the roofline gives the structure a contemporary feel, while the translucent canopy roof allows natural daylight to flood onto the picnic tables and bench seating creating an inviting atmosphere.

Positioned within an existing courtyard area and near the school’s popular food pod, the shelter has helped reduce pressure on indoor communal areas and transformed an underused part of the school site into a vibrant hub for outdoor dining and socialising. The timber structure’s all-weather protection means students can comfortably use the space in every season, whether for socialising, outdoor learning or simply taking a breather from busy indoor areas.
