Transforming an exposed site into a much loved sheltered walkway

Sainsbury’s Bude

The brief

Sainsbury’s came to us wanting to create year-round weather protection through a sheltered walkway for customers at their busy Bude store which heavily used by both locals and holiday goers alike. They also wanted to shield their trolleys from the elements to drive down maintenance costs.

The response

We created an elegantly curved enclosed sheltered walkway that ran the full 80m length of a previously very exposed and windy section of the outside of the store, creating a sheltered environment for shoppers as they entered the store. An integrated trolley store – accessed via strategic exit points along the walkway – maximised convenience.

The wow

The walkway has been a resounding success. Now affectionately nicknamed the ‘Bude tunnel’ it is now covered in fairy lights during every festive season.  This gives the tunnel a magical grotto like environment that has become so popular it has even gained its own TripAdvisor page.

The ‘Bude Tunnel’ is proof of the transformative impact even simple projects can have – turning problematic sites into areas that become locally loved.
