At Prenton High School for Girls in Birkenhead, sport is seen as central to the school’s offering – not only a vital part of the curriculum, but an important way of nurturing key skills and building a sense of community across the school.

A generous new covered MUGA (multi use games area) has transformed the school’s sports offering. Once a fair-weather activity, outdoor sports can now be offered year-round thanks to the MUGA canopy’s generous dimensions that keep players sheltered from whatever the UK weather has in store.

Multiple court markings and a generous 4m eaves height means the versatile space can be used for everything from netball and basketball to volleyball, football, fitness training and tennis.

And thanks to the MUGA canopy’s Opal 60 roofing – which admits 60% daylight while screening out harmful UV rays – the space is kept light and bright during winter months while players are kept protected from the sun on hotter spring and summer days.

The attractive new space won’t only re-invigorate sports lessons and after-school sports clubs it also serves as the perfect multi-use space that the school can use for a range of purposes outside of sport. For instance, the school plans to use the covered area as the collection and drop off point for lockable phone pouches at the start and end of every school day to avoid the reception area becoming congested.

The covered MUGA can even – if the school chooses – act as an additional source of revenue, with all-weather sports facilities in hot demand from community sports clubs. And as the whole structure is built using ultra durable galvanised steel – it’ll be there to be enjoyed for decades to come.
