We have a long-standing relationship with Tates of Sussex, a renowned chain of Sussex-based garden centres and were delighted to be asked to play a central role in a multi-million upgrade of its popular Mayberry Garden Centre.

Mayberry Garden Centre in Portslade, Sussex isn’t your standard garden centre. City based and in a coastal location it demands structures that can withstand harsh coastal conditions.

Integral to the transformation was an expansion of premium plant display space to showcase Mayberry’s own-grown plant range, as well as its expansive selection of bedding plants, perennials, shrubs and houseplants.

To do this in the most cost-effective way that would make maximise the potential of Mayberry’s site our in-house design team devised a scheme incorporating an expansive new plant and retail display canopy, as well as extensions to existing canopies. We also planned to reclad four existing canopies while on site to give them a new lease of life.

The wow

A stunning twin span barrel-vaulted plant display canopy now creates an impressive stage for showcasing Mayberry’s impressive plant range – year-round.

Thanks to its Opal 60 roofing, the inviting space not only protects shoppers and plants from coastal winds and heavy downpours, but also from the sun’s glare and UV rays, while still retaining a light drenched area for plant growing and shopping.

And it’s not just the new plant and garden accessory display area that is impressive. Extensions to two existing canopies at the centre demonstrate the flexibility of our canopy designs and their ability to evolve with a centre’s ambitions. Both extended canopies provide Mayberry with valuable additional all-weather display space, allowing them to constantly shine a light on seasonal accessories and ranges.

In line with Mayberry’s commitment to sustainability guttering has been made integral to the design of the new and extended canopies – allowing the centre to harvest rainwater for plant watering – saving costs and valuable resources. And because all our structures come with industry leading 25-year guarantees the centre can also rest assured that the longevity box – another win for sustainability – has been ticked too, with the galvanised steel finish hardy enough to withstand Mayberry’s coastal environment.
