The brief
The Countess of Chester Hospital team came to us wanting a way of connecting a newly installed modular ward with a recently constructed critical care unit, enabling staff and often critically ill patients, to move between the two easily and comfortably whatever the weather.
The response
We created an attractive enclosed hospital walkway between the two, giving it a generous 2.5m span to allow sufficient clearance for all patient apparatus and medical equipment. A high vaulted roof also enabled us to comfortably incorporate ramps into the structure so that staff could easily push patients between the two new buildings on beds or in wheelchairs.
The wow
A completely transparent barrel vault design enabled us to create a hospital walkway that was entirely weatherproof and enclosed, but that still had a light, bright, airy feel that is valued by patients and staff alike.
