Covered MUGA creates all-weather sports facility

The brief

The Orpheus Centre in Bletchingly, is an independent specialist college in Surrey that seeks to increase the confidence and skills of young disabled people by empowering them to live fulfilling, independent lives. We were approached by the team at The Orpheus Centre when they were looking to build shelter for their multi use games area (MUGA) and outdoor gym equipment.

The response

Covered MUGAs are a cost-effective solution to providing all-weather sports surfaces, and are increasingly popular with schools, sports clubs and leisure centres. They are also fast becoming one of our favourite projects because of the transformative impact they have in realising the full potential of educational sites and sports facilities.

For this project, our in-house design team created a twin span solution, that could cover both the outdoor gym and create a covered MUGA court with a single structure.

The sides of the green gym were left open to allow the all-important connection with nature to remain, while the sides of the MUGA court were given inobtrusive fenced walls to enable uninterrupted ball play and protect the gym area from wayward balls.

With all our structures designed, manufactured, and installed by our in-house team, we can turn around projects within tight time frames. In this case, this ambitious project was turned around within weeks during the college’s summer holiday, so that students could gain maximum benefit from their newly enhanced facilities during term time.
