Canopies and sustainable buildings for the education sector

The School Food Plan and the Universal Infant Free School Meals Policy are recent government supported movements that look to improve school children’s diets and the nutrition and taste of the food available in schools.

From 1st September 2014 all pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in England are eligible for free school meals. The policy supplements The School Food Plan, a report written for The Department for Education that cites research showing that free school meals has education benefits as well as health advantages for children.

Increasing the take-up of school food does however have its logistical challenges. Many schools do not have the space or facilities to implement the change. Schools will also require a culture change from within, including the careful planning of the school dining experience.

That said improving the pupils’ dining experience will have a positive impact on the uptake of school meals and the wider school day. A pleasant environment can also have an impact on their sense of wellbeing.

This steel canopy creates a covered area adjacent to an existing building that helps Durrington First School deliver many areas of the curriculum as well as providing additional outside dining space.

Fordingbridge also completed a sustainable building for Durrington. The building includes a kitchen space, toilet facilities and a large dining hall which can be split into two Independent teaching spaces:
