Thanks to the vision of Headteacher Mr Brixey, students at Angmering School can now enjoy a taste of continental café culture when they tuck into their lunchtime sandwiches.
Presented with a brief to provide a seating area with shelter from the sun and rain, and to make better use of a narrow space between two buildings, Fordingbridge designed and installed an elegant pair of umbrella structures, turning an awkward and underused area adjacent to the school’s cafeteria into a stylish covered area for ‘al fresco’ dining.
The response to the new facilities has been warm. Mr Brixey said “It has produced a welcome extension to our undercover seating for students at break and lunchtime. It was quick to put up and is well liked by the students.”
Fordingbridge’s design solution was to create two umbrella outdoor canopies with a fabric covering which offers a useful 95% protection from harmful UV rays as well as the obvious shelter from wet weather.
The steel frame was painted in a shade of blue to match other external paintwork at the school and each of the two outdoor canopies provides just under 30m² of cover – a size which does not required a building regulations application, reducing the paperwork involved. The entire project was brought in at just under the £15,000 budget.

Tensioned fabric structures consist of a steel framework with hot-dip galvanised or RAL/BS painted finish, plus fabric membrane offering durability of 10 to 20 years for the PVC membrane, to 25-30 years with the PTFE membrane coating.
Shapes for tension fabric structures include: cantilevered, hypar, umbrella and double conic. We are continually exploring the application’s possibilities. Rows of sail canopies can be used to dramatic effect.
